I have learned a great deal about education and mentoring from my six semesters of teaching assistance and participation in >80 extension or outreach events, over half of which I helped co-organize. These include displays or booths at venues such as the Utah State Pow Wow and Science Unwrapped, as well as at local schools and the Logan Farmer’s Market. I have also given several invited public talks, on subjects ranging from the usefulness of an entomology degree to how climate change will impact desert bees.
My greatest contributions to public outreach took place during my two years as the Utah State Entomology Club’s Live Animal Manager, a position in which I designed, established, and managed the Utah State Bug Zoo. The Bug Zoo has since proven invaluable for Utah State’s Insect Tours program, which introduces local classes to insects through interactive, on-site events. Insect Tours serves an estimated 1,000 children each year, and I have personally given 15 of these tours.
